Experienced recruiters at search firms begin evaluating talent from the very first interaction—whether that’s an email, a voicemail, or an initial phone call. Much like hiring managers, recruiters assess professionalism, communication skills, and attention to detail immediately.
Your first impression with a recruiter is just as important as the one you plan to make with an employer. Recruiters serve as trusted partners to their clients and are tasked with filling critical roles. As such, they cannot afford to risk their reputations by representing candidates who appear careless, unprepared, or unpolished.
Below is an example of a courteous but candid response sent to a job seeker whose initial outreach failed to demonstrate professionalism or thoughtful communication—an approach unlikely to earn consideration from either an employer or an experienced recruiter.
Greg,
I may be the first point of contact between you and the companies I represent. For that reason, it’s important that you establish yourself as a polished professional from the outset.
Requesting assistance through a one-sentence email containing typographical errors and no compelling context does not inspire confidence—either in me or in my clients.
I encourage you to rethink your approach. You’re welcome to call me to discuss your résumé, and we can start there.
Respectfully,
John Daskas
